KATOPTRON: Reflections of Memory

Filtered through the distortion mirror of memory, reflections of events in our past become twisted.

The objective reality of lived experience is conveyed through simple, one-dimensional geometric shapes whose surface is smooth, sleek, and colourless.

Multi-dimensional, rough forms with distressed coloured surfaces evoke the subjective nature of remembrance – memories confounded by emotion.

Materials used include sterling silver, brass, lava stone, acrylic glass, and pigment. Although the metalwork involved the use of traditional silversmithing techniques, the rest of the materials used made it necessary that I experimented before I could come up with alternative techniques.

* Katoptron is the ancient Greek word for “mirror”.
